Sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of ProTen’s strategy and business vision. We are deeply committed to safeguarding the welfare of our chickens while minimising our environmental impact, ensuring a sustainable future for our operations and the communities we serve.

ProTen actively invests in initiatives designed to reduce its environmental footprint, including:

ProTen has made a commitment to reduce FY22 emissions intensity (electricity and gas) by 45% by 2030 and to achieve net zero by 2050 and reports against this target annually.
As part of this commitment ProTen has installed solar power on all farms, is rolling out an LED lighting initiative, has planted more than 70, 000 trees and is experimenting with new technology to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Our Commitment

Animal welfare

Animal welfare is a cornerstone of ProTen’s operations. We are dedicated to ensuring the well-being of our chickens through exceptional care and humane treatment, we are proud to rear our stock under the banner of the RSPCA Approved Farming Scheme. Our farms are audited regularly and are accredited suppliers. This means our standards are higher than the minimum required by law and we have a zero tolerance approach to behaviour that leads to breaches of the law.

ProTen operates in alignment with the National Animal Welfare Standards for the Chicken Meat Industry, developed by the Australian Chicken Meat Federation. These standards are based on both national and international guidelines and model codes of practice, reflecting best practices in animal welfare.

Like the rest of the meat chicken industry in Australia, Proten does not grow its chickens in cages or feed its chickens hormones.

ProTen believes that effective management of biosecurity risks is an integral part of a successful broiler chicken business. ProTen complies with comprehensive industry biosecurity procedures designed to protect its broiler farms from diseases, pests and other biological risks.
